In his statement marking African Union Day, the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Dr Fateh Boutbig, recalled the Sirte Declaration of 9 September 1999, which called for the creation of the African Union, and the formal launch of the Union in Durban in 2002.
The President paid tribute to Africa’s founding leaders and to the citizens who have devoted themselves to the pursuit of unity, solidarity and integration across the continent.
“The vision proclaimed at Sirte remains as relevant today as it was in 1999,” the President said, adding that “our responsibility is to translate that vision into tangible progress for the people of Africa.”
Dr Boutbig described the Pan-African Parliament as a key organ of the African Union that gives African citizens a voice in the development and decision-making of the continent.
He affirmed the commitment of the Seventh Legislature to advancing Agenda 2063 in partnership with national and regional parliaments, African Union organs, member states and citizens, with a focus on integration, governance, peace and security, sustainable development and shared prosperity.
